We went and saw Ashlee play volleyball the other night. She is so amazing! I love being able to go and watch the girls in the talents that they have. Here are just a few pics of Ash... WAY TO GO!!

New Beginnings

"Pattern Your Life After Christ" was our theme this year for New Beginnings. We were so excited to officially "welcome" Hanna into the Young Women's Program, and we are thrilled to get McKenzie in June. The Young Women and Sister Allred introduced our Values, both Hanna and McKenzie's dads introduced their daughters to us. The Leaders performed a skit (never to be repeated!) Briana sang a beautiful music number, then Sister Gatusso and Bishop shared some thoughts on making Christ the center of our lives and how standing steadfast and immovable strengthens us and gives us instructions to pattern our lives after the Savior. We ended the night with yummy cupcakes :) Thanks so much to everyone who helped make this evening such a success!!

Rollerskating

March kicked off our "Value Activities" in which the girls are paired together and plan an activity around the value of that month. Briana and Hannah were in charge of our Individual Worth activity and we got to go rollerskating! I think everyone had a GREAT time, it was a lot of fun and they set the bar high for everyone else :) We had a great turn out and it was awesome that you girls brought friends with you. I hope to someday edit my videos I took that night to post them on here, but for now, enjoy a few pictures.

Sarah's Concert

We had the opportunity to listen to Sarah's Orchestra Concert at Anderson High School on February 26th. She did awesome! We were so impressed!! I think I cut somebody out of this picture for which I apologize!

Cherry Grove v. Eastgate

The young women played against the Eastgate ward today in basketball. Eastgate put up a good fight but the Cherry Grove girls pulled it out to WIN!! We were so proud of the teamwork and the sportsmanship of the girls!

President Hinckley has passed away

President Gordon B. Hinckley, who led The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints through twelve years of global expansion, has died at the age of 97.

President Hinckley was the 15th president in the 177-year history of the Church and had served as its president since 12 March 1995.

The Church president died at his apartment in downtown Salt Lake City at 7:00 p.m. Sunday night from cause’s incident to age. Member of his family were at his bedside. A successor is not expected to be formally chosen by the Church’s Quorum of the Twelve Apostles until after President Hinckley’s funeral within the next few days. (source www.newsroom.lds.org)

New Coach

We're excited to have a new coach this year, Kathleen Jump. She is really excited to coach, and we are thrilled to have her! She will be a fantastic addition to our Young Women's Program. :)

The Cherry Grove Sparkies!

Basketball season is upon us and the girls are getting into the full swing of things with a great start! On Saturday, January 19, we had our first game against the Montgomery Ward. Sammi led the team off to a great start with the first basket. Among those who scored were Alex, Karla, and Hanna. The girls played great defense and we pulled off a nail biter in the end winning the game 17-16. Go Sparkies!

Babysitting for the Elders Quorum

On Friday January 25, the Young Women provided babysitting for the Elders Quorum Social. They watched 27 kids! And did a fantastic job! I, being a parent of two of the kids that were tended, am especially grateful for the service provided and was really pleased with how well smoothly everything was run. I was pleasantly surprised to come back & find two happy boys who were way past their bedtime, but were having a blast. Thank you so much young women and leaders who helped with this activity!

Ice Skating!

On Friday, January 15th we combined with the Young Men to go ice skating downtown at Fountain Square. I think everyone had a blast! We survived the bitter cold temperatures and were able to stay warm with some hot chocolate & cookies.

A New Year, A New Theme!

We are really excited about the new theme this year which comes from the scripture Mosiah 5:15 "Be steadfast and immovable, always abounding in good works"

Caroling

Tuesday, December 18th we combined with the Young Men to go caroling at the retirement home. We were fortunate to be able to sing to Gordon Young who just returned from a stay at the hospital. The Youth should be proud of themselves for getting out their "comfort zones" and bringing some Holiday Cheer to those who needed it. It's not easy for most of us to go nursing homes, but everyone had a smile on their face and sang with the love in their hearts. What a great way to get ready for Christmas.

Christmas Concert

On Tuesday, December 11 we had the opportunity to listen to Nicole and Sammi play in their Turpin High School orchestra concert. They were amazing! I think everyone in attendance that night agreed that the concert was impressive and fun to listen to. What a treat! Thanks girls, it was a great performance, can't wait for the encore :)

Christmas Party!

Tuesday, December 4 was our Christmas Party at Sister Woolfs. We socialized, watched Mr. Krueger's Christmas, ate goodies and played Twister. It was a nice, relaxed, evening and a fun way to celebrate the season together.

Young Women in Excellence

Tuesday, November 27 we had our anual Young Women in Excellence. This is an opportunity for the girls to really showcase their personal progress achievements and be recognized for all of the hard work they put into earning their young womanhood medallion. We had a short program in the chapel where the young women shared personal stories of their experiences with the personal progress program. Everyone did a fantastic job and I think all who were in attendance were very overwhelmed with love and humility to be in the presence of such amazing young ladies. The young women and leaders sang a beautiful harmonized version of "Because I have Been Given Much" with the help of Sister Hansen and then we moved to the cultural hall to see the displays that the girls had put together. Each value was represented with various projects that the girls have been working on all year. It was a beautiful room and so much fun to see what everyone has been up to.

14 Day Walk With Christ

We had a special activity Tuesday, Nov 13 as Sister Beck kicked off our 14 Day Walk With Christ. We were all dressed in shawls and sandals and given "candles" to set the mood. The Relief Society room was decorated very elegantly and peacefully as different images and statues reflected our Savior. As we sat on the floor, Sister Beck spoke about we cannot truly understand a person unless we have walked in their shoes. A beautiful video was shown about the life of Christ and then we were challenged to be inspired by the 14 Day Walk. Each girl was given 14 envelopes to open 1 each day for the next 14 days. Inside are different questions, stories, and thought provoking challenges and statements to help us understand what it means to be a disciple of Christ. We hope you are enjoying this activity and can't wait to hear how it's going for each and every one of you.

Service Activity

Tuesday, November 6, we had the opportunity to serve the Elderly by bringing them flowers and visiting with them at the nursing home. This was a fantastic activity! We had an overwhelming response of gratitude and love from the people we shared time with, and the joy that comes from service radiated from the Young Women. Some of us had to get out of our comfort zones a bit when it came to talking to the patients there. We were able to sing a few songs for Gordon Young, a member of our ward, and promised that we would be back soon.

Halloween Combined Activity

On October 30 we combined with the Young Men for a Halloween Social! Sister Mebius taught a line dance, there was great refreshments, and everyone enjoyed a fun everning. What can I say, a picture says a thousand words!

Class Activities

We had class activities October 23 (I know, I'm way behind but I did just get back in town!)
The beehives carved pumpkins and had some awesome jack-o-lanterns. The Miamaids made Christmas Candles at Sister Schaeffer's house. If anyone has pictures, forward them to me and I'll post them. The Laurels made pies at Sister Fergusons. So we had an eventful and constructive night using and learning lots of talents. Hope everyone had a fun Halloween!

Amelia's Homecoming

On Friday, Oct. 12th Amelia High School had their Homecoming parade and football game. Alex and Karla were in the parade representing the Seniors and Jill and Emily were in the parade as cheerleaders. From the parade everyone went onto the big game. Amelia crushed their opponents! Jill and Emily were so much fun to watch as they cheered, jumped, did back handsprings and brought the crowd to their feet. Jill is on the Varsity cheer squad, and Emily is on the JV team, so it was a great chance to see them both cheer together. You did a great job!

Cinnamon Rolls!

On Tuesday, October 2nd, we met at Sister Beck's home to learn how to make her fabulous cinnamon rolls. The girls did a fantastic job of listening to directions and then helping on the various steps. We had a great turnout and the cinnamon rolls turned out delicious!

Here's the Recipe:
1 1/4 c. boiling water
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. margarine
1 tsp. salt
3 eggs
2 pkgs yeast
4 1/2 c. flour

Filling:
2/3 c. brown sugar
1 T. white sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 cube butter

Boil the water. Add salt, sugar and margarine in bowl. Pour water over sugar mixture to melt. Beat cold eggs and add to mixture (Be sure not to "cook the eggs" by adding them directly to the hot boiling mixture. Temper them by adding small amounts of the sugar mixture to the eggs, then you can pour the eggs into the sugar mix) Sprinkle yeast over mixture until wet and let stand for 10 minutes (Make sure you don't kill the yeast! The water should be lukewarm not boiling hot) Add flour (may be more or less than the 4 1/2 c) Let dough raise until doubled in size (takes about 1 hour).

Punch the dough down. Put on flour board and roll into rectangle. Raise 1 1/2 hour. Sister Beck has learned that spraying a generous amount of the "I can't believe its not butter spray" works really well instead of trying to spread butter on the dough.

Next, add the sugar and cinnamon. Make sure all parts of the dough rectangle are covered. You can add raisins, raspberries, nuts, etc. to the filling if desired. Roll up the dough in a tight "hot dog" then slice the rolls about 1-2 inches thick. Place in a well sprayed dish (put the seams of the rolls towards the middle of the pan) Bake at 375 degrees for 15-20 minutes. If you want, you can brush the rolls with butter when they come out of the oven to make them a little softer. Frost with icing and they are ready for delivery! Enjoy!

Skit Night

I apologize that we're out of chronological order! These are the pictures from our skit night a couple of weeks ago. The YW and the YM combined for our activity. They had about 20 minutes to use the props that were provided to put together a skit. Moses & the Red Sea, Joseph & the Coat of Many Colors, Daniel in the Lions Den, and David & Goliath were the story lines each group was assigned. Everyone did a FANTASTIC job!

Ashlee knocks our socks off!

This past Tuesday, September 25, the Miamaids went to watch Ashlee play volleyball. She is a Sophomore on the VARSITY team at Anderson! Blocking, spiking, setting, and passing, Ashlee helped her team to dominate their opponents. We had a great time at your game Ash, good luck with the rest of your season.

Dance Off

Tuesday we had an awesome activity thanks to Rita, Jill & Sammi! Thanks for all your hard work girls ;) The young women and even some of us leaders strutted our stuff out on the dance floor. We were divided up into teams and got to pick our music and choreograph a routine. The "Yo-Mama's!" (Hannah, Sariah, Sis. Woolf, Sis. Glutz, Sis. Blake & Sis. Beck) got the party started with a country routine. They had a short but spicy number, full of spirit fingers and even a little hip shaking.

The "Ben-gals!"(Hanna, Nicole, Jill, LaTika, Sis Curtis, Baby Curtis, & Katie Christensen) had a longer, more difficult hip-hop routine that even had some stunts included. The girls broke it down with their own solo's to end with a bang.

Our esteemed judges--Karla, Rita & Sammi critiqued our work and then awards were given out for choreography, best moves, best faces, and best spirit.

Swimming Party!

On Tuesday we said goodbye to summer with a splash! Our girls combined with the Eastgate ward to swim, play games and eat treats. As always, the diving board and the trampoline were a huge hit. We are very grateful for the Nelson family who let us take over their backyard!
